The DXY Standard: A Protocol for Authentic Yixing Teapots

The DXY Standard: A Protocol for Authentic Yixing Teapots

In a market challenged by mass-produced replicas and nominal grading systems, the DXY Standard was established to provide verifiable transparency for Yixing Zisha teaware.

We move away from unverified paper certificates, focusing instead on objective evaluation across three core dimensions: mineral purity, structural craftsmanship, and physical performance.

Pillar I: Mineral Purity – The "Yuan Kuang" Criterion

The foundation of our selection is the exclusive use of Original Ore (Yuan Kuang). In accordance with the National Standard of the People's Republic of China for Purple Clay Ware (GB/T 10816-2008), authentic Zisha must preserve its natural mineral and sintering properties. Our material criteria include:

  • No Chemical Additives: Zero addition of Barium Carbonate, artificial metallic oxides (such as Cobalt or Manganese), or chemical coloring agents.
  • No Surface Waxing: We reject artificial gloss treatments. The natural luster of the clay should develop organically through standard brewing and tea-oil absorption over time (see Patina Maintenance).
  • Authentic Sourcing & Porosity: All clay is sourced from established strata in Dingshu Town, ensuring the characteristic dual-porosity structure required for optimal tea interaction.

Pillar II: Craftsmanship – Production Method Transparency

DXY ZISHA works with artisans who maintain traditional forming techniques. While we recognize the role of modern auxiliary tools, we maintain a clear distinction between Fully-handmade and Semi-handmade methods:

  • Verifiable Tool Marks: We look for internal structural indicators, seam alignments, and clay stress patterns that verify manual construction.
  • Independent Studios: We prioritize collaboration with individual potters and small Yixing studios whose output is defined by quality rather than commercial volume.
  • Rational Evaluation of Titles: We respect the historical lineage of Zisha craftsmanship but evaluate each piece on its technical merit rather than market-driven "Master Titles."

Pillar III: Physical Evaluation – The 6-Point Technical Check

Before inclusion in our collection, every teapot undergoes a practical evaluation based on fluid dynamics and ceramic physics:

  • Mineral Identification: Verification of clay type through structural shrinkage patterns, ensuring the ore matches its declared origin (e.g., Dicaoqing or Lvni) and is free from out-of-province materials.
  • Pouring Dynamics: Evaluation of laminar flow quality and the precision of the water cutoff for functional handling.
  • Lid Fitting & Tolerance: Testing the physical tolerance and airtightness of the lid gallery to minimize the loss of volatile tea aromatics.
  • Mineral Texture: Verifying visual characteristics, such as the natural, heterogeneous distribution of granules (star-flecking) within the fired clay.
  • Sintering Density: Assessment of acoustic resonance to ensure the clay has reached its optimal maturity temperature in the kiln.
  • Ergonomic Balance: Evaluation of the center of gravity when full, ensuring a balanced and controlled pour for the user.

Independent Science – Complimentary Non-Destructive Testing

To verify our internal standards with empirical science, we offer a complimentary, third-party laboratory verification for your specific teapot. Upon your request during checkout, we will submit your vessel to Yingxing Kaiwu Testing (应星开物) in Yixing city—an authorized, independent ceramic testing institution. The laboratory performs advanced, non-destructive spectrometry analysis to verify the clay's mineral composition without altering or damaging the teapot. This official testing report is provided completely free of charge to ensure absolute transparency before shipping. For processing times and detailed steps, see our Buying Guide.

We believe that a teapot's physical attributes and performance in the cup are the only true measures of its authenticity. By sharing objective data on Zisha mineralogy and craft, we aim to support tea enthusiasts in developing independent appreciation skills.

Our focus is on documenting and preserving the reality of Yixing heritage. (For brewing optimization, please refer to our Tea Pairing Guide).
